Beeswax Amber vs Honey Amber: What's the Difference?

Beeswax amber is opaque and milky, honey amber is clear and golden — here is how the difference happens and how to choose.

Beeswax Amber vs Honey Amber: What's the Difference?

At first glance, beeswax amber and honey amber can look like two different materials. In fact, both are natural amber; the difference lies mainly in how light passes through them and how their inner structure formed.

Beeswax Amber: Opaque and Milky

Beeswax amber is opaque, with a creamy, milky look that ranges from pale butter yellow to a deeper chicken-fat yellow. Its cloudiness comes from tiny bubbles and fine inclusions scattered through the material, which scatter light instead of letting it pass through. The result is a soft, matte glow rather than a clear shine, and each piece can look quite different depending on how dense that cloudiness is.

Honey Amber: Clear and Golden

Honey amber, by contrast, is transparent or translucent, with a warm, honey-like golden colour. Light travels through it more easily, so you can often see depth, gentle colour variation, and small natural features inside. It has a bright, glassy warmth that many people associate most closely with classic amber jewellery.

How to Choose Between Them

Neither type is better in general — the choice is about taste and use. Choose beeswax amber if you like a soft, understated, creamy look that pairs easily with everyday clothes. Choose honey amber if you like transparency, glow, and a clearer view of the stone's inner character. Whichever you choose, look at the piece in natural light, check how it feels on the skin, and let the colour you keep coming back to guide you.
