Caring for Amber: Habits That Keep It Beautiful

Amber is soft, so small daily habits — gentle cleaning, keeping chemicals away, and storing it separately — go a long way.

Caring for Amber: Habits That Keep It Beautiful

Amber is beautiful partly because it is warm and light, but those same qualities mean it needs gentle care. With a few simple habits, a piece can stay bright and smooth for years.

Remember That Amber Is Soft

Amber has a hardness of about 2–2.5, which is much softer than most gemstones and metals. That means it can be scratched by harder jewellery, keys, and rough surfaces. Try not to knock it against hard objects, and be especially careful with rings and bracelets, which meet more surfaces during the day.

Keep Chemicals and Heat Away

Perfume, hairspray, sunscreen, and household cleaning products can dull or damage amber, so put your amber on last, after any sprays or creams have dried. Avoid long exposure to strong sunlight and sudden heat, and never use an ultrasonic cleaner on amber: the vibration and cleaning solution can crack it or loosen its setting.

Clean Gently and Store Separately

For everyday cleaning, a soft, dry cloth is usually enough. If a piece needs more attention, use a cloth slightly dampened with lukewarm water, then dry it at once with a soft cloth. Do not use abrasive cloths or harsh cleaners. Store each amber piece separately in a soft pouch or a lined box, away from harder jewellery, so it is not scratched in storage.

A Simple Routine That Works

In short: wear it gently, keep chemicals away, clean it softly, and store it on its own. These small habits take only a minute, but they protect the surface and the warm glow that make amber so appealing.
